Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen doesn’t need much introduction-it’s a phenomenally popular song, partly because of Jeff Buckley’s gorgeous version on his album Grace. So give it a try-even though it's a lush, lyrical fiddle piece, it works pretty well on the uke too. Ungar describes the song as coming out of a "sense of loss and longing." As one YouTube commenter put it, "The song defines the words 'achingly beautiful.' " The song served as a goodnight or farewell waltz at the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camps run at the time by Ungar and his wife Molly Mason. This songbook, as well as his other chord melody songbooks, can be downloaded for free from his site I'm working on his arrangement of "Ashokan Farewell," The song was the theme for Ken Burns' Civil War documentary, though it was written not in the 19th century but rather in 1982 by folk musician Jay Ungar. and most of the songs aren't too difficult. The songbook covers a variety of genres (blues, Hawaiian, folk, rock, country, etc). He has recently updated and expanded the songbook, which includes PDFs of chord melody songs with tab, chord diagrams, and standard musical notation for each song. A few years ago, I gave a shout out to the Ukulele Chord Melody Songbook, with songs compiled and arranged by Spencer Gay.
